Stunning Natural Fly Geyser- a very little known tourist attraction

Stunning Natural Fly Geyser- a very little known tourist attraction

When you first see this stunning geyser you don't believe it's real. But it is, This geothermal geyser is somewhere near Gerlach, Nevada. The colors are due to different mineral deposits as well as algae growing on it. . This geyser is called Fly Geyser and it's located approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Gerlach, in Washoe County, Nevada. Fly Geyser is located on the private Fly Ranch owned by Todd Jaksick and is accessible only by a small private dirt road. The owner wanted to keep the people away from the geyser so he placed a high fence and a locked gate with several metal spokes on the top to keep trespassers out. Several organizations have tried to purchase the land for conservation, and make it open to the public, but have been denied.
Located in Hualapai Valley north of Gerlach, Nevada, Fly Geyser is becoming known around the world for it’s unusual formation, vivid colors and unique beauty.

Along with the geothermal water came minerals, including sulphur dioxide, which gives the geyser its incredible coloring. What's more, the minerals don't just color the geyser but have caused the build-up of its shapes, including the overall look of a fly over 5 feet high. There are dozens of terraces that the water flows into and hectares of land that are affected.

In 1916, a shaft was drilled in hopes of striking water to turn part of this desert area into farmland. A geothermal pocket of water was struck resulting in a geyser of boiling water which turned the area into a desert wetland. Decades later in the 60's, the underground boiling water found a weak spot in the ground and a natural geyser was born.
